Lotus 1-2-3 Tip
By Karen Knox

This tip comes from a question that was sent to the Lotus listserv by Susan Bowie from Maine Revenue Services. Susan asked, "When in a Lotus spreadsheet, how do you keep the column titles at the top of each page when typing in data and when printing the document?" Responses to Susan's question were sent in by Sue Brann (Maine Revenue Services), Karen Knox (BIS), Janey Barton (BIS), Michael Howe (Accounts & Control), and Brenda Musselman (Employee Health Insurance).

To keep the columns titles visible when typing in data follow the instructions below.

Click in the cell directly below the first title you wish to "freeze".

  1. Click View from the menu, then select Titles.
  2. In the Titles dialog box, select either Rows above current cell or Columns left of the current cell or both choices.
  3. Then click OK. The spreadsheet will now keep the titles visible as you enter data.

To keep titles visible on each page when printing follow the steps below.

Go to

  1. File, then select Preview and Page Setup.
  2. In the Properties Box select the Header/Footer tab (4th from left).
  3. At the bottom of the box there is a Print as titles on each page area in which you select the cells you want to use as titles on each page.
  4. Lotus 1-2-3 will allow you to drag your mouse over the cells you want to use.
  5. When you have finished selecting the cell, close the Properties Box and print the spreadsheet.
