Veranda Street Bridge Public Input

Future Public Outreach and Engagement

MaineDOT has finalized the design for the project. This effort included reviewing comments received during previous public meetings and evaluating a range of potential design adjustments in response. To get updates on any future meetings, please sign up for email alerts.

Previous Project Meetings

MaineDOT held the following meetings where public input and feedback were solicited on a series of design solutions.

  • 3/7/19 Public Hearing

    • Added traffic signal at I-295 southbound on-ramp
    • Eliminated center turn lane and turn pocket at southbound on-ramp
    • Shifted roadway north, into north bridge span, to maximize green space
    • Enhanced bike/ped connections

At the project information session, public feedback centered around the following themes:

    • Desire to see the roadway further south, away from the houses along Veranda Street, to improve visibility for vehicles exiting driveways and side streets.
    • Concerns about shifting parking to south side of road, and whether parking is needed at all.
    • Concerns still existed regarding vehicle speeds: how can vehicles be slowed down.
    • Questions regarding whether the two-lane off-ramp is needed.
    • Concerns were expressed regarding placing bike lanes immediately adjacent to on-street parking.

The project team has compiled and considered public input and is currently working to develop a range of possible adjustments that address comments received at the recent public meeting. This effort includes, but is not limited to:

    • Evaluating visibility for vehicles exiting side streets and driveways.
    • Developing options that strike a balance between shifting the roadway south, and providing opportunities for public green space.
    • Evaluating options for further slowing vehicle speeds.
    • Reducing on-street parking and adding a buffer between the bike lane and parked cars.

    • New single-span bridge in center span of existing 3-span bridge
    • Accelerated bridge construction
    • Provide continuous centerturn lane
    • Traffic signal at I-295 NB off-ramp
    • No traffic signal at I-295 SB on-ramp
    • Bicycle / pedestrian accommodations

At the second project information session, public feedback centered around the following themes:

    • Maximizing the opportunity for green space, including:
      • Shifting Veranda Street to the north
      • Shifting the off-ramp to the west
      • Reducing the roadway footprint
    • Concerns were voiced regarding vehicles speeds. Suggestions were made to reduce the roadway width to further reduce vehicle speeds
    • A traffic signal was requested at the I-295 southbound on-ramp intersection

After the public meeting, the project team compiled & considered public input and the project design continued. An updated design concept was presented at the March 7, 2019 public hearing.

    Public Informational Meeting #1, April 12, 2017

The following three design concepts were presented and discussed with the public.

    Alternative 1

    • Significantly simplifies roadway
    • Increases green space
    • Provides bike/ped accommodation
    • Tee intersection at both ramps
    • off-ramp intersection near bridge
    • Intersections are fairly close together

    Alternative 2

    • Significantly simplifies roadway
    • Increases green space
    • Provides bike/ped accommodation
    • Tee intersection at both ramps
    • off-ramp intersection at entrance to 3G’s Tire & Auto Service
    • Improves intersection separation

    Alternative 3

    Alternative 3

    April 12, 2017 Public Informational Meeting #1 - Alternative 3.

    • Significantly simplifies roadway
    • Increases green space
    • Provides bike/ped accommodation
    • Tee intersection at on-ramp only
    • Off-ramp intersection at Olympia Street

At the first project information session, the public voiced support for Alternatives 1 and 2, since they would have the greatest impact on reducing vehicle speeds and creating a more urban roadway network. After the public meeting, the project team compiled & considered public input as design work continued. Significant consideration was given to:

    • Traffic management on I-295 and Veranda Street during construction
    • Bridge type, size, location and clearances
    • Selecting a practical bridge length
    • Advancing the roadway design for Veranda Street

An updated design was presented at the April 2018 public information session.
