Construction Phasing and Traffic Management

Accelerated Bridge Construction will be used to replace the existing bridge. This will minimize impacts to the public to the extent practicable. The proposed construction approach involves replacing the bridge using a technique called a “lateral slide.” The process includes:

  • Constructing the lower portion of the new bridge below the existing bridge.
  • Constructing the upper portion of the new bridge on temporary supports installed east of the existing bridge.
  • Closing the Interstate and Veranda Street once the lower and upper portions of the new bridge are built. The existing bridge will then be demolished, and the upper portion of the new bridge will be slid laterally into place.

Traffic management before and after the planned roadway closure will generally consist of the following:

  • On the interstate, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction. Occasionally, nighttime lane closures will be used to complete critical construction activities.
  • On Veranda Street, two lanes of traffic will be maintained to the extent practicable. During reconstruction of the roadway, traffic will need to be restricted to one lane of alternating traffic controlled by flaggers.

Traffic management during the planned roadway closure will generally consist of the following:

  • On I-295, all lanes of traffic will be closed for one weekend.
  • The I-295 southbound on-ramp will be closed for one weekend.
  • On Veranda Street, the roadway will be closed for up to five consecutive days.

Traffic will be detoured away from the project site during the closure period.
