Jobs & Training - 58th Maine State Police Training Troop

Pre-RTT Week 3

The Recruits of the 58th RTT continued their familiarization training this week within their respective Troops. Recruits assigned to Troop C stayed busy this week, as we responded to several calls for assistance including a shots fired call, several accidents, and seizure of narcotics from vehicle searches. Several Recruits were able to participate in field sobriety testing for intoxicated drivers, and learned how to build a solid case in court utilizing the intoxilyzer machine, which is designed to calculate an operator's Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). Recruits in Troop B were also busy as we responded to a major vehicle accident involving three vehicles, one of which had rolled several times. We were able to learn how to process an accident scene while maintaining control of pedestrians and traffic. We were able to take photos of the scene, conduct traffic control, and gain critical information from witnesses and vehicle occupants to determine the cause of the accident and if there were any other pertinent circumstances surrounding the incident. Recruits in Troop B were also able to become familiar with K-9 units in their area, and learned about the capabilities of both narcotic and explosive detection dogs which the Maine State Police utilize as part of their regular patrol duties. Other responses this week included serving a no-contact order, investigating a simple assault allegation, and responding to a structure fire in central Maine. I was riding with Tpr. Stedman who is on the Dive Team. I have attached pictures for the website. The troopers were searching for a handgun and 2 long guns that were involved in burglaries in the area. The guns were unable to be recovered due to strong currents making the search difficult. A holster involved was recovered along with a possible surveilance tape from a store. I have some photos We were all able to enforce traffic regulations during time between responses. We learned how to identify violations such as speeding, expired insurance and registration, and seatbelt violations. We learned how to issue citations for these violations and the importance of staying proactive within our patrol sectors to prevent accidents and mishaps due to operator negligence. Finally, all Recruits received reporting instructions and documents needed to successfully complete the Maine State Police Academy. We received our "Need-To-Know" booklet which outlines and details the Maine State Police Core Values, Mission Statement, Trooper's Pledge, and other crucial information we'll need to learn to become successful Maine State Troopers. As reporting time nears, we are all anticipating training to become a part of an organization based on the Core Principles of Integrity, Fairness, Compassion, and Excellence.
