HIV, STD Prevention

HIV and STD prevention are integral parts of health education curriculum.

Listed below are resources and links to current HIV and STD prevention and education services:

  1. Advocates for Youth Advocates for Youth champions efforts that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health.

  2. Maine Family Planning  Maine Family Planning’s Prevention Program promotes youth sexual and reproductive health by strengthening school and community-based sex education. We provide technical assistance, innovative resources, and professional development opportunities to leaders working with K-12 youth to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes.

  3. Maine HIV, STDs, and Viral Hepatitis Program  The Maine CDC mission is to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, viral hepatitis and HIV, to reduce illness and death, and to promote the health and well-being of people with, or at risk for these diseases.

  4. Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey  MIYHS purpose is to quantify the health of Kindergarten and Grade 3 students through parent interviews, and the health-related behaviors and attitudes of 5th through 12th graders by direct student survey.

  5. New Beginnings In partnership with the Maine Department of Education and Maine Family Planning/PREP, New Beginnings provides annual training workshops for youth workers and teachers from throughout Maine who serve high-risk youth.

  6. US Centers for Disease Control Sexually Transmitted Diseases  Breaking News from 2018 National STD Prevention Conference: New CDC data find that nearly 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were diagnosed in the United States in 2017.Check out this site for the latest news on STDs.
