Description: A session based around block coding mazes, where students are first taught the block-coding basics and left to their creativity. We will speak from the front of the class while displaying our computer screen on a wall/whiteboard/projector screen to teach the maze basics. Participants will use their own laptops to create a Scratch account (it's free and the website is school-used and safe), then create a simple maze with our guidelines. After that, participants can design their own levels and personalize their mazes however they desire. Easy code commands will be taught with buttons, backgrounds, and sprites. Trying again is a necessity, and help is always on a hand! People will be encouraged to communicate, and there will be a showing for those who wish to share at the end of the session.

Doing so will create community connections, help students learn about important regional, national, and international issues, and challenge students to push the boundaries of their understanding of the world and their place in it (and all while connecting meaningfully to the curriculum and state standards). The students, who themselves made and shared documentaries that were between five and twenty minutes long about the topic of immigration in our communities, are going to teach how to formulate ideas for a film, storyboard an idea, interview and record interviews, edit film, and share your films with the public. Description: Game design starts with a single idea. This idea is shaped and sculpted over time by the designer and eventually grows into a game. A game designer needs expertise from many fields to be successful. Coding, art, music, writing, and math skills are just a few. In this session, we are going to look at the best way to make a satisfying game: make it juicy. Juicy things wobble, bounce around, and make little cute noises. Juicy is a catch-all phrase for the things that make a game more satisfying to interact with. Using a variety of tools, we will remix a few popular games, make them juicy, and surprise and delight the player.

Description: Students will watch a short video clip of a book trailer created by students. Students will learn how to create a book trailer based on a book they've read. How we will do this is by listing the tools necessary for creating a book trailer. We plan to have some short books available (or participants come prepared with a book they've read) & can begin mapping out the most important scenes. If time, students will have a chance to 'act out' scenes & begin putting together the scenes to create the trailer. What isn't finished in the session can be finished on the student's own time as they will leave knowing what programs to use to create/finish their book trailer.

Description: We are a school of readers at JFDS, but while we have many enthusiastic readers, we also recognize that reading shouldn't happen in isolation. When a child finishes a book they've enjoyed, they should have a way to express their opinion and feelings about that book to others.
Through a combination of modeling, and by breaking the process of podcasting down to a step-by-step process, we hope that each participant will be able to create their own podcast by the end of the session.
