Industry Organization Standard:  NCAE (National Council for Agriculture Education)

Note: NCAE’s standards document includes 7 “Career Pathways” that are sub-organized into “Performance Elements” aka Framework, and “Performance Indicators” aka Duties and Tasks.  The document also includes a 3- level rubric and is cross-walked with national academic standard grade level expectations.  Maine CTEs currently have programs that fall under 4 of the 7 AFNR Career Pathways. 

Framework, Duties and Tasks:

  1. Utilize economic principles to establish and manage an AFNR enterprise.

    1. Apply principles of capitalism in the business environment.

    2. Apply principles of entrepreneurship in businesses.

  2. Utilize appropriate management planning principles in AFNR business enterprises.

    1. Compose and analyze a business plan for an enterprise.

    2. Read, interpret, evaluate and write a mission statement to guide business goals, objectives and resource allocation.

    3. Apply appropriate management skills to organize a business.

    4. Recruit, train and retain appropriate and productive human resources for businesses.

  3. Utilize record keeping to accomplish AFNR business objectives while complying with laws and regulations.

    1. Prepare and maintain all files needed to accomplish effective record keeping.

    2. Implement appropriate inventory management practices.

  4. Apply generally accepted accounting principles and skills to manage cash budgets, credit budgets and credit for AFNR businesses.

    1. Use accounting fundamentals to accomplish dependable bookkeeping and fiscal management.

  5. Assess accomplishment of goals and objectives by an AFNR business.

Maintain and interpret financial information (income statements, balance sheets, inventory, purchase orders, accounts receivable and cash-flow analyses) for businesses.

  1. Use industry-accepted marketing principles to accomplish AFNR business objectives.

    1. Conduct appropriate market and marketing research.

    2. Develop a marketing plan.

    3. Develop strategies for marketing plan implementation.

    4. Develop specific tactics to market AFNR products and services.

    5. Merchandise products and services to achieve specific marketing goals.

  2. Create a production system plan.

    1. Prepare a step-by-step production plan that identifies needed resources.

    2. Develop a production and operational plan.

    3. Utilize appropriate techniques to determine the most likely strengths, weaknesses and inconsistencies in a business plan and relate these to risk management strategies.

    4. Manage risk and uncertainty.
