Concussion Management

The Maine Department of Education, through the Concussion Workgroup, has developed a Concussion Model Policy as a resource for school districts as they develop their own model policies and protocols. Other resources throughout this site include forms, training opportunities and links to more information for families and students, coaches, school staff and healthcare providers.

Each year, approximately 1.7 million people in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury (concussion). About half of injuries are sports-related, and 40 percent of sports-related concussions involve children between the ages of eight and 13. In the most serious cases, traumatic brain injuries can lead to permanent disability and death.

These statistics prompted the Maine Legislature to pass a law, in May 2012, to give specific guidelines for policy development and managing concussions in all school settings.
