The Science Alternate Assessment (SAA) is part of the MSAA assessment platform, beginning in 2021. It measures individual student progress in science and is designed for those students who meet the criteria to participate in state alternate assessment. The SAA is administered in grades 5, 8, and in the third year of high school. Please consult this infographic to see if a student qualifies for an alternate assessment.
The SAA is administered in an on-line format and is also available as a paper-based accommodation, per the student’s unique needs and IEP. The online format includes built in accessibility features, including:
- Alternate color themes
- Alternative text
- Answer masking
- Increase/decrease size of text and graphics
- Increase volume
- Line reader
- Object replacement
Accommodations are changes in the materials or procedures of the assessment that do not alter the construct being measured. A student may use the accommodations in his/her/their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) while taking the assessment. Note: The use of any physical prompting, including hand over hand, invalidates the results of the test for the student.
