(April 30, 2020) Unemployment benefits for for fishermen, aquaculture operators, and other independent and self-employed workers will be available tomorrow, May 1, 2020. A letter from Maine Department of Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman about unemployment benefits is attached and includes the following tips:

Please apply for PUA using the online system which is available 24/7: https://www.maine.gov/unemployment/
There is no need to rush to apply. Benefits will be retroactive and your benefit for this week is through Saturday May 2nd at 11:59 p.m.
Phone lines (1-800-593-7660) are open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday May 1 and, because of the launch of this new program, on Saturday May 2nd 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
On Friday only: To balance the load on internet traffic and keep the process moving during the first part of the day, please follow this alphabetical schedule for applying on line.
If your last name begins with A-H, go online 8-10 a.m.
If your last name begins with I-Q, go online 10-12 noon
If your last name begins with R-Z, go online 12 noon-2 p.m.
After 2 p.m., please access the system any time 24/7.
