Pesticide Container Fee

On June 16, 2020, PL 2020, Chapter 548 went into effect and established a fund for portions of operations and outreach activities of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Diagnostic and Research Laboratory. Under this law, the sale of every container of pesticide product in Maine is subject to a 15¢ fee at the point of sale. Maine pesticide dealers are responsible for familiarizing themselves with Maine Revenue Service requirements for collection of the fee. Actively licensed commercial applicators and licensed private and ag basic applicators may contact the Sales, Fuel and Special Tax Division of Maine Revenue Service to obtain an affidavit of exemption.

All Maine businesses selling pesticide products are subject to the pesticide container fee. If you would like to receive monthly electronic updates on the pesticide container fee, you may do so by signing up for Pesticide Container Fee electronic updates.

An explanation of the Maine Revenue requirements and the process for obtaining pesticide container fee exemption may be found on the Sales, Fuel and Special Tax Division of Maine Revenue Service website.

Maine Registered Pesticide Products

By January 31 of each year, the Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) will post a list of all Maine registered pesticide products. This list will include:

  • Product Name
  • EPA Registration Number
  • 25b Designation (Products Registered in Maine Only)

The BPC will update this list monthly and added products will be clearly designated. This site will serve as a repository for pesticide product lists.
