Frequently Asked Questions

  1. MAY I SEND MONEY TO A RESIDENT?

    Yes. An individual account is established for each resident. Money may be mailed to the resident or transferred online at: https://www.maine.gov/online/correctionsdeposit/main.cgi. 
    We recommend on-line transactions by credit card as those will be posted to a resident's account without a 14-day hold period.  Money for residents may not be dropped off in person. DO NOT SEND CASH. All funds received in the form of U.S. Postal money orders, cashier's checks/official checks from a Maine bank, money orders from a Maine bank, government checks (including tribal checks), shall be posted to a resident's general or phone account within three (3) working days after receipt in the facility Business Office but shall be placed on hold for a period of fourteen (14) calendar days from the date of posting.  Money orders/checks must be legible and contain the resident's full name (with middle initial and MDOC number if you know it) to ensure it is applied to the correct account. They should also have the sender's full name and address; otherwise they will not be processed.

  3. WILL I GET SEARCHED?

    All persons are subject to search prior to and as a condition for visiting. This includes minor children. Persons found to be trafficking contraband will be suspended from visiting and may face criminal prosecution. The searches may include metal detector and/or pat search.
  4. WHAT MAY I BRING IN, OR SEND IN THE MAIL FOR THE RESIDENT?

    Nothing may be brought in through visitations.  LCYDC provides each resident with basic personal hygiene needs, clothing, writing paper, and envelopes. There is a canteen where the resident may buy snack foods, stamps, hygiene items and so on.  DO NOT BRING CASH OR SEND CASH IN THE MAIL!

    DO NOT SEND: Personal property, stickers, musical greeting cards, Polaroid pictures. These items will not be allowed and the resident will have to pay to return them to sender. Letters written in code or other mail that might endanger the safety or welfare of any resident or the security of the facility may be rejected.

  5. MAY I SEND NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES OR BOOKS?

    LCYDC enforces the "Publishers Only Rule." All publications, which include but are not limited to newspapers, magazines, soft back books or paperbacks must be received directly from the publisher, or recognized commercial agent of the publisher. Click for approved publishers LCYDC shall NOT ACCEPT such items if they are sent to residents from home, friends, or private individuals. The resident must bear the costs of returning all items considered to be contraband or non-allowable items.

  6. MAY I SPEAK WITH A JUVENILE ON THE PHONE?

    LCYDC has outgoing telephones available in every housing area. We do not accept incoming phone calls for residents. Residents are not allowed to call any victims. If you have an emergency which we can verify with local public safety officials, the Social Worker is your contact person during business hours. If after normal business hours, ask to speak with the Facility Operations Supervisor. Our phone number for non-visit related business is 822-2600.

  7. WHERE IS LONG CREEK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER? 

    LCYDC is located at 675 Westbrook Street in South Portland, Maine, approximately 5 miles from Portland, Maine's Transportation Center (Amtrak Train and Concord Bus) and approximately 0.5 miles from the Portland International Jetport. There is public transit to or from the area near LCYDC.  Upon request, a phone will be available for visitors to arrange rides and in addition staff will provide visitors with information on taxi services.
