People
General Oliver Otis Howard
The Autobiography of Oliver Otis Howard (7 mb) Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) A Union general in the American Civil War from Leeds, Maine (Bowdoin College 1850, West Point 1854). Began the war as commander of Maine troops and rose to the rank of Major General. Recieved the Congressional Medal of Honor. After the war, he commanded troops in the West, conducting a famous campaign against the Nez Perce tribe. He founded of Howard University, and Lincoln Memorial University, and was the only person ever to head the U.S. Freedmens Bureau.
