Firearms Hunter Safety

COVID-19 Guidance Checklist: Recreational Safety Courses

Maine offers Firearms Education courses in three different formats: standard classroom, home study or online. Courses vary in presentation and teaching style as well as student work requirements outside of the classroom. Courses are taught by trained, certified volunteer instructors according to statewide standards. Courses cover the following topics: proper firearms handling (rifle and shotgun), survival/first aid, hunter responsibility, map and compass and landowner relations.

Online Course: Students 16 and older can complete the firearms hunter safety course online at hunter-ed.com/maine and will be provided a voucher upon completion of the online exam to purchase a firearms hunting license.

Students 10-15 years of age can complete the firearms hunter safety course online at hunter-ed.com/maine and will be provided a voucher upon completion of the online exam to then attend the required skills and exam day. In the skills and exam session students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents and pass a 50-question test with a grade of at least 70%. Students must complete the online course and provide voucher number to register for the Skills and Exam Day. Students must also bring the voucher to the first class.

The Standard Classroom Course consists of 12 hours of classroom instruction. Students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents and pass a 50 question test with a grade of at least 70%.

The Home Study Course consists of about 9 hours of classroom instruction broken up into a 3 hour introduction followed by either 2 nights or one day of classroom and activities. Students are required to complete a workbook or chapter reviews from an online course, both of which complement the student manual. Students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents and pass a 50 question test with a grade of at least 70%

New courses will be posted below as they become available.
