Maine Military Historical Society Museum
The Maine Military Historical Society Museum is presently Maine's only museum dedicated solely to Maine military history.
Purpose:
- To promote and encourage research into the history and traditions of the military of Maine.
- To foster and encourage public education in Maine military history.
- To establish, maintain, and operate a museum of Maine military historical objects and artifacts.
- To acquire and hold by gift, trade, bequest, purchase or otherwise, Maine military historical objects and artifacts.
- To catalog, preserve, and display such property.
Upon entering, you will be greeted with the Museum's theme. This mural shows a colonial Militiaman, with his musket and powderhorn, leaving home and family to answer "A Call to arms." It is symbolic of all of Maine's citizens who have made the necessary sacrifices over the years and who answered the call to defend and preserve our nation's freedom.
Maine citizens have served in all branches of the service dating from the early colonial times through the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, to today.
This museum is for those who served, as well as those who never had the opportunity. For the old...who remember. For the student...who wants to know. For the young...who need to learn what Maine's dedicated men and women have done.
The Museum is located by the front gate of Camp Keyes, Augusta on Winthrop Street. It is open by appointment. For more information, write or call:
