Maine to host 2008 conference for the National Association of State Treasurers

MAINE TO HOST 2008 CONFERENCE FOR THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE TREASURERS
(AUGUSTA) – Maine State Treasurer David G. Lemoine, State Representative Dave Miramant and State Representative Ed Mazurek announced today that Rockport, Maine will host the 2008 Annual Meeting of the National Association of State Treasurers, (NAST). The conference will take place Aug 18-21, 2008 at the Samoset Resort and is expected to bring more than 300 public finance experts to Maine.
“This is the premier annual meeting for state treasurers from around the nation,” said Lemoine, “and I am pleased to bring the event to our corner of the world.” Lemoine added, “We do exceptionally efficient work in the Maine State Treasurer’s Office, and I wanted to bring my colleagues from across the nation here to see our operations. I also believe that hosting this public finance conference will provide an immediate boost to next summer’s tourism numbers and a long-term advancement of Maine’s economic prospects through the showcasing our many economic and quality-of-life strengths.”

State Representative Ed Mazurek pointed to, “the unique appeal of the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum and many other local attractions as great reasons to enjoy coastal Maine. We are thrilled to host this conference.”
Lemoine concluded by noting that “building nationwide buzz about Maine as a terrific conference destination means finding opportunities now that bring events here to Maine. Winning the right to host the 2008 NAST conference was just such an opening, and I am confident that our guests will leave looking for another way to return to Maine.”
While the role of the State Treasurer varies from state to state, most State Treasurers manage investment portfolios, issue state debt, advise on college savings plans, oversee unclaimed property programs, and work on financial literacy initiatives.
