MPUC Request for Proposal: Electric Standard Offer Service for Commercial and Industrial Customers

November 15, 2012

Augusta, Maine – Yesterday, the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) issued a Request for Proposals for retail electricity standard offer service for medium and large commercial and industrial (C&I) customers in the territories of Central Maine Power (CMP) and Bangor Hydro Electric (BHE). The term of service is for six months, beginning March 1, 2013. Initial proposals are due on December 11, 2012.

CMP and BHE are electric transmission and distribution utilities serving customers in southern, central and eastern Maine. Total electricity sales to their medium and large C&I customers are approximately 5.5 million megawatt hours annually, of which about 20% currently receives standard offer service.

The RFP and related materials are available on the MPUC website at: http://www.maine.gov/mpuc/electricity/rfps/so_solicitations.shtml

Background: Maine law requires the MPUC to arrange for standard offer service though a competitive bid process, and to ensure that standard offer service is available to all customers in Maine. Customers receive standard offer service by default if they have not purchased supply from another electricity supplier.
