MPUC Issues RFPs for Electricity Standard Offer Service—including Residential & Small CommercialSeptember 14, 2010 Augusta, Maine—Today, the Maine Public Utilities Commission issued a Request for Proposals (RFPs) for retail electricity standard offer service for all customer classes in the service area of Maine Public Service (MPS), and for residential and small commercial customers within the territories of Central Maine Power (CMP) and Bangor Hydro-Electric (BHE) for terms of up to three years in duration beginning March 1, 2011. Initial proposals are due to the Commission by November 4th, 2010. Regulated by the Commission, CMP, BHE and MPS are electric transmission and distribution utilities serving customers throughout Maine. Total electricity sales to these customer classes in 2009 were 5.3 million megawatt hours (MWh), of which about 95% is provided by standard offer service. MPS all classes: http://www.maine.gov/mpuc/electricity/rfps/standard_offer/sosmall0910/mps.shtml It is the Commission’s responsibility to solicit standard offer service from licensed competitive electricity providers through a competitive bid process. Maine’s retail electricity access rules require the Commission to ensure that standard offer service for electricity supply is available to all customers in Maine. If electricity customers have not purchased supply from another electricity supplier, they receive standard offer supply service.
