New OIT Internet Website

By Lisa Leahy and Peter Bossie, OIT

OIT is pleased to announce the launch of its new website ( http://www.maine.gov/oit ). The goal of this endeavor is to have fresh content and reduce the duplication that exists between OIT's internet and intranet. In the upcoming months, information that is not sensitive in nature will be moved from the intranet to the internet. During the past year, requirements gathering took place with managers during which they were provided examples of other states' web sites and best practices were discussed. We will continue to take feedback and enhance areas of the site as this effort is very much a work in progress. The new OIT website was launched to coincide with the launch of maine.gov's new media gallery, in which CIO Dick Thompson has a featured video. The media gallery can be accessed from a link on OIT's new website. If you are interested in acquiring services, contact your web coordinator for more information.

Items to keep in mind when viewing the new site:

On the right hand side of the home page, you will see For State Agencies. This area is viewable only within the state's network; it is being filtered by IP address. At this time, those accessing this site from home, via VPN - Juniper, will not see this area, you will only see featured links. Citizens will not see the For State Agencies area. OIT will use the For State Agencies area to drive state employees to the secure and sensitive information presented on the OIT intranet.

All links on the home page were chosen by reviewing threshold level statistics on both the internet and intranet over a 3 month period. The links on the home page reflect the most common sites people are visiting.

The next steps are to make ourselves available to any managers who wish to discuss their respective areas. Our plan is to have a representative from each team designated as a content manager. To keep our information current it is imperative to have each team own and manage their content. We will provide each of the designated staff with Dreamweaver Contribute license/software which is a very intuitive tool for updating content. Additionally, with the new site up and running, we can begin removing the redundant and outdated information from the intranet. Presenting an informative web presence that is easy to navigate will send a clear message to our customers that indeed “We Do IT”.
