Maine Department of Corrections Online Money Deposit Service
By Lesley McCaw, InforME
The Department of Corrections launched a new Money Deposit Service on December 6, 2010. The service allows friends and family members to make online deposits to the trust and phone accounts of eligible adult prisoners and juvenile residents, with the convenience of a credit or debit card. Prior to this service, monies had to be mailed to the appropriate correctional facility (in the form of checks, money orders, etc) for manual processing and disbursement to the individuals.
The new service was developed in collaboration with InforME and information technology contractor Abilis NE. This new service is available 24 hours a day at http://www.maine.gov/online/correctionsdeposit . A complete list of definitions and service rules can also be found on the service welcome page.
Users of the service will need to register and create an account. The one-time registration is free and allows for future deposits to be made using a registered username and password.
This integrated service is fully automated and requires no manual intervention. A $2.40 processing fee will be charged to the user’s credit card for each deposit transaction made using this online service.
The Department of Corrections is offering the service as a convenience to friends and family of prisoners, and to help relieve state government of the burden of manual receipt and processing of deposits at each correctional facility.
