Public Access Wireless Network Change
By Wayne Gallant, Chief Technology Officer, Maine Office of Information Technology
Users of the State’s “Public Access” wireless network can expect to see minor changes resulting from technical enhancements made recently by OIT’s network team. Upgrades were implemented that strengthen security and supply network administrators with improved management tools.
Frequent users of this wireless network include OIT facility visitors, the State’s business partners and the DOL Career Center’s customers.
The change seen by end users of the Public Access network is that they will now be greeted with the Terms of Service associated with its use. Users must read and agree to the Terms by clicking on the “Accept” button at the bottom of the page before a connection is granted. Users will then be connected to the www.maine.gov web site at which point they may continue business as usual.

State employees should refrain from connecting to the Public Access wireless network as it is an unsecured network that is intended primarily for public access. State employees should continue using the secure SOM AIR network if a wireless connection is needed in a state office.
