Long-Term Care Insurance Open Enrollment

Currently the State of Maine offers a voluntary long-term care insurance benefit with Aetna.  Effective December 1, 2009 the program will be with The Prudential Insurance Company of America.

  • Open enrollment will be held now through October 30th
  • Eligible employees enrolling during the open enrollment period will be guaranteed acceptance into the plan without providing medical history.
  • As with Aetna, the coverage continues to be portable (you can continue the policy after you leave State service)
  • You can also extend coverage to qualified family members, such as a spouse, parent, or grandparent. (They must provide evidence of good health satisfactory to Prudential.)

“Long-term care” is help or supervision provided for someone with severe cognitive impairment or inability to perform the activities of daily living: bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, and continence. Services may be provided in a facility or at home—and care may be given by a professional or informal caregiver, such as a friend or family member.

We will be holding a series of informational meetings and webinars.  The schedule can be found at http://www.maine.gov/beh .  Space is limited so we encourage you to preregister by notifying tina.l.grenier@maine.gov (please include day and time of the meeting you wish to attend).

* Current Aetna participants :  You will have the option to either stay with Aetna or switch to Prudential.  Prudential will be mailing you a customized package which will include a comparison between your current Aetna policy and a comparable Prudential policy in order to help you make a decision.  If you decide to switch to Prudential, that change will become effective April 1, 2010.
