08. How do I know if someone is my dependent?

Any person you would be entitled to claim as a dependent on a federal income tax return should be listed as a dependent on your application.

A dependent is a person you support. They are people you claimed (or could claim) on your tax return. In general, to claim a dependent you must pay more than half the cost of support. For more information on who may qualify as a dependent, see the instructions for completing federal Forms 1040EZ, 1040A, or 1040 which can be found at http://www.irs.gov.
