VETERANS COMMITTEE

10/13/09

PRESENT; Ed Clift, Paul Luce, Paul Watkins, David Keaton, Bill Libby, Jon Guay, David Klein, Cindy Swaney, Bob Carr, Don Foster, Garret Oswald

The first meeting of the MJC Veterans Committee was called to order by Ed Clift, Chair of the committee. After welcomes, introductions, Garret Oswald gave an overview of the workforce development system in Maine. Garret also spoke about how the Maine Jobs Council as the State Workforce Investment Board is structured and how the sub committees like the Veterans committee fit into the process. Garret explained that committees work on programs, products or policies that move the system in a desired direction that improves access and service to various populations of Mainers.

Jon Guay spoke next about the new federal Priority of Service for Veterans and spouses of disabled Veterans and what it means for veterans looking for service from the workforce development system. Jon referenced the Training and Employment Guidance Letter with provides direction concerning priority of service and also about the DVOP/LVER positions that can assist veterans in connecting and working with the system.

Paul Luce was up next and spoke about specific Vets services in Maine. Paul referenced the new 5 year VETS Plan and new policies issued by the Bureau of Employment Services concerning Maine’s response to the priority of service directive.

After some questions about all the information that was presented, the group discussed possible goals for the committee. On ethat was discussed was greater connection to the private sector and accessing the employment opportunities that were being created. It was noted that approaching owners and presidents of companies yields better results than just connecting with HR departments.

Lastly, the committee discussed future meeting schedules as well as some housekeeping issues. A schedule for 2010 committee meetings will be sent out by the new year.
