Saving on Phone Bills

April 5, 2004

Phone customers can save money by avoiding three common practices:

  • Signing up for inside wire plans. These plans, which have a monthly charge, act as an insurance policy if something goes wrong with the wiring in your house. But these problems are so rare that the plans typically are a waste of money.
  • Choosing premium local calling service. These services let you call additional towns, but it may be less expensive to have a basic service and just pay the extra charge when you call those communities.
  • Picking expensive long-distance providers. Rates aside, many providers round their charges to the next minute. It's better to pick one that rounds to the next six seconds.
