Commissioner Wight and his wife Peggy have owned and managed the Sunday River Inn in Newry since 1971. In addition, Commissioner Wight is the owner/manager of the Sunday River Cross Country Ski Center and the manufacturer of Maine Woodsman’s Weather Sticks. He is also a registered Maine Guide. Commissioner Wight received his Bachelors degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and then worked at Pratt & Whitney as an Experimental Engineer. In 1966 he joined the U.S. Air Force, becoming a Captain, receiving a bronze star for meritorious service as a munitions officer in Vietnam. Commissioner Wight is the first selectman/assessor of the Town of Newry, deacon of the West Paris Congregational Church, director of the Northeastern Savings Bank, treasurer and past-president of the Maine Nordic Ski Council, and president of the Friends of the Androscoggin River. He is a member and past president of the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce. He has served as the director of the Maine Innkeepers Association, and on the boards of the Bethel Historical Society, the Maine Publicity Bureau and the Mahoosoc Land Trust. Commissioner Wight founded the Newry Planning Board. He is the board chairman of the Maine Conservation School. Recently, Commissioner Wight initiated an exchange program between Newry, Maine and Newry, Northern Ireland. This exchange has brought school children from the Bethel schools to Northern Ireland, and Irish students to western Maine and allows students to share information electronically between schools in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Bethel, Maine. |
