Foliage Report for September 17, 2008

Foliage Color Beginning to Show in Northern Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine – Maine’s fall foliage is turning, but not quite fast enough to change the color of the current conditions map here after the Department of Conservation’s second foliage report of the season.

Forest rangers in Aroostook County (Zone 7 and northern Zone 6) where the change in leaf color begins each year are still reporting very low leaf color, or less than 10 percent toward peak, along with very low leaf drop. Maple trees are now showing shades of red, and birch and ash trees are beginning to show tints of yellow at the highest elevations along Route 11 in the middle of the county.

Pockets of color are also emerging around Baxter State Park (Zone 6), Moosehead Lake (Zone 5) and the Rangeley Lakes region (Zone 5), but the overall color change and leaf drop in these areas and the rest of the state remains very low.

Don’t miss these events while experiencing Maine’s early fall color this weekend: Art in the Park on the village green in Bar Harbor (Sat.-Sun.), the 11th Annual Harvest Fest & Chowda Cook-Off in Bethel (Saturday), the 4th Annual Halloween & Harvest Fair in Alfred (Sat.-Sun.), and the Saddleback Fall Festival in Rangeley (Sunday).

To provide the most accurate foliage information, DOC rangers will report conditions statewide every Wednesday through Oct. 15. Learn more about Maine's fall touring routes and outdoor activities at www.visitmaine.com.
