Western Maine Resort Towns, Downeast Coast Displaying Peak Foliage
AUGUSTA, Maine – Peak foliage color has reached Rangeley, Farmington and Bethel, and the downeast coast, according to the fifth 2011 fall foliage report from the Maine Department of Conservation (MDOC).
Currently, Maine Forest Service and state park rangers are observing peak leaf color, or at least 75 percent color change, in the western lakes and mountains region (Zone 5 south) covering the towns of Rangeley, Kingfield, Farmington, Rumford and Bethel. Peak color is also being reported along the downeast coast from Bucksport to Eastport (Zone 2) and in interior Hancock and Washington counties (Zone 4 south). These tracking zones now have moderate, or 30 to 50 percent, leaf drop, according to rangers.
High color, or 50 to 75 percent toward peak, is now showing in the central region from Dover-Foxcroft to Bangor (Zone 3 north), while the southern section of the region from Skowhegan to Augusta, Auburn and Fryeburg has moderate color, or 30 to 50 percent toward peak. Leaf drop is currently low, or 10 to 30 percent, in these regions. Coastal locations from Kittery to Belfast (Zone 1) also have moderate color, along with moderate leaf drop.
Rangers are reporting past peak foliage color in northernmost Maine from Aroostook County to Moosehead Lake. These areas now have high leaf drop, or 50-70 percent.
MDOC forester and park ranger-led hiking and paddling events planned for this weekend in our state parks include, a guided eight mile, four hour, fall foliage paddle at the Androscoggin Riverlands State Park, taking place on Saturday, Oct 15 at 10 a.m.
A family friendly, one-half mile, one hour hike at Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal, beginning at 10 a.m. on Oct 15 at the summit trailhead.
An easy, three-mile, two hour hike at Sebago Lake State Park in Casco, beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct.16.
A moderate, 2.5 mile hike at Camden Hills State Park, overlooking the Atlantic Seaboard from the top of Mt. Battie will also take place on Sunday, Oct 16 beginning at 1 p.m.
