Foliage Color Peaking in Maine's Western Mountains
AUGUSTA, Maine – Peak leaf color is spreading through the lakes and mountains region of western Maine, according to the fourth fall foliage report from the Maine Department of Conservation (DOC).
Forest rangers in the tracking zone covering Bethel, Rangeley, the Carrabassett Valley region, and Moosehead Lake (Zone 5) are observing peak color, from 85 to 100 percent, and moderate leaf drop of less than 50 percent.
Peak color is also holding on in Aroostook County (Zones 6 and 7) despite recent frosts, and is covering the tracking zone from Millinocket to Lincoln and Calais (Zone 4). Leaf drop is moderate in these regions according to the report.
High color, from 50 to 70 percent toward peak, has reached the tracking zone that stretches from Fryeburg and Sebago Lake to Augusta, Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft (Zone 3). This region also has moderate leaf drop, according to rangers.
Moderate color, from 30 to 50 percent toward peak, and low leaf drop of less than 30 percent is being reported in all costal locations (Zones 1 and 2) from Kittery to Eastport.
Maine's fall foliage conditions will be updated each Wednesday through Oct. 13 on this website. Visitors can sign up to receive the weekly reports by email, and submit photos of foliage scenes from around Maine.
