Credits for Graduation for SAU-placed Children and State Agency Clients in Special Purpose Private Schools

ADMINISTRATIVE LETTER: 011
POLICY CODE: IKF

TO:    Superintendents of Schools, Principals, Directors of Special Services, Special Purpose Private Schools and School Counselors

FROM:    Susan A. Gendron, Commissioner

DATE:    August 28, 2008

RE: Credits for Graduation for SAU-placed Children and State Agency Clients in Special Purpose Private Schools

Background: During the adoption of Me. Dept. of Ed. Reg. Chapter 101, Maine Unified Special Education Regulations Birth to Age Twenty, standards for special purpose private schools were developed and are being implemented through the school approval and monitoring process. The standards can be found in Chapter 101, XII.2

All special purpose private schools are required to align their curriculum with the Maine Learning Results. Additionally, Sections IV. 4 (D) (4) and (5) and (E) (5) require credit assessment of high school children who are state agency clients or highly mobile children.

You will find a sample annual agreement for SAUs and special purpose private schools located at
http://www.maine.gov/education/edletrs/2009/adlet/011attach.rtf
to use to recognize student work completed in a special purpose private school for credit towards graduation.

Please share this information letter with any of your staff who may be involved in assessing and granting credits for student work.
