Gendron, Commissioner Date: May 5, 2008 SUBJECT: United States Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Recent Federal legislation, Public Law 110-161, The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008, authorized funds for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) to all States not currently in the FFVP. Schools must offer free fruits and vegetables to students during the school day. Twenty-five schools in each State can participate. The purpose of the program is to increase fresh fruit and vegetable consumption in elementary and secondary schools. The level of funds provided to any one school depends on the demographics of schools that are selected to participate in the program. Complete the School Selection Application found at http://www.maine.gov/education/sfs/ffvp.htm and return one original and three copies to Division of Purchases; Burton M. Cross Building, 4th Floor; 111 Sewall Street; 9 State House Station; Augusta, ME 04333-0009 by May 29th at 2 p.m. if you are interested in being considered for this program. Label the envelope with the following statement: USDA Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program. Emailed and faxed copies are not accepted. Written questions only about this application may be sent to gail.lombardi@maine.gov and written answers received by 2 p.m., May 9, 2008 will be posted at http://www.maine.gov/education/sfs/ffvp.htm by end of business day on May 21, 2008. The Maine Department of Education has created a scoring tool with an emphasis on use of local products for a portion of the school purchases and nutrition education.
