October 25, 2005
AUGUSTA— Senator Dennis Damon (D-Hancock County) of Trenton was welcomed as a guest speaker today at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill. Senator Damon was on hand to discuss the upcoming referendum election with the seniors in Rebecca White’s Street Law class.
“What a great group of students” said Senator Damon. “They were engaged in the discussion, and ready to learn. These are our future leaders, and soon to be voters. As adults in the communities in which they reside, it is important for us to encourage them to vote, and likewise to encourage them to be knowledgeable about the matters that they will be casting their vote on.”
Senator Damon spoke to the students about the seven ballot questions, including the civil rights initiative that is question one, the constitutional amendment involving the taxation of waterfront property, and the five bond questions. He was also on hand to help the students who will be 18 years of age by the election register to vote. A total of ten students registered to vote during his visit.
“It was truly great that we were able to get these students registered to vote, and that they are showing interest in the process at an early age,” said Senator Damon. “An educated, voting populous is how progress takes shape. These students are the next generation, and I am confident that they will remain engaged and participate in the political process.”
