Senator Martin & Representative Fischer Pleased With BRAC Decision

August 25, 2005

Chairman Principi hails Limestone as the “highest quality DFAS center in the system”

AUGUSTA— Senator John Martin, (D-Aroostook County) of Eagle Lake, and Representative Jeremy Fischer, (D-Presque Isle), of Presque Isle, expressed their satisfaction today over the Base Realignment and Closure Commission’s decision to maintain operations at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service located at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone.

“This was clearly a well thought-out decision, and certainly not one made in haste,” said Senator Martin. “The Limestone DFAS is an extremely high performing center, and stands out from similar centers across the nation. This work ethic was clearly recognized, and rewarded.”

“Without question, this was the best decision possible,” said Rep. Fischer. “Our workforce here in Aroostook County is second to none, and I certain the BRAC Commission clearly recognized this.”

The BRAC Commission voted to expand the workforce at Limestone DFAS to at least six hundred positions. DFAS currently employs a little over 300.

“Christmas came early to Northern Maine this year, and I cannot possibly think of a more worthy workforce,” said Senator Martin.

“Aroostook County has certainly proven that we are up for the task of expansion, and I am certain that our residents will not disappoint,” said Rep. Fischer.
