Active Shooter --

This class is for state employees only. We all recognize, like hurricanes or earthquakes, that a mass shooting incident is unlikely. But good risk management practice still prepares for that eventuality. Maine's Bureau of Capitol Police has developed a training class that offers information on what to do in the unlikely but deadly serious possibility of someone entering a state facility with the intent of killing many people. This is not a tactical course intended for a law enforcement audience. It is for the average person who may find themselves confronted by an "active shooter emergency" in the workplace. The program offers suggestions on things that can be done to minimize the casualties and improve the chances of a quicker and more focused police response. It also offers suggestions for what people should do if they find themselves in the immediate vicinity of a shooter. The actual training will take about two hours, including time for questions. The PowerPoint slides are informative and include a short video that helps participants to visualize their response options. There are also links to other information. The instructor is Sgt. Bob Elliot, Capitol Police. He is well informed and has been trained by federal, state, and municipal law enforcement agencies.
