Union - Four flowering crab apple trees were planted on Oct. 17 on the grounds of Union's Vose Library, at 392 Common Road, in what became a community effort.

The library's landscape advisor, Sherry Cobb, arranged for a donation of the trees through Maine Forest Service's Project Canopy, from Dutton's Greenhouse and Nursery in Morrill, which was going out of business.

The crab apples were transported to the library by the town of Union, along with deciduous trees which were planted on the Common. Jamie Metcalfe of Union Stone dug holes with his excavator and brought along some gravel to lighten the clay soil. Compost donated by George Fowler, also of Union, and peat moss donated by Union Agway, further enriched the soil.

After Metcalfe and Fowler had planted the trees, Fowler pruned them. The bare soil was covered with bark mulch donated by Herb and Vicki Harriman of Come Spring Farm and Sawmill.

As a result of this careful work by many library supporters, library patrons can look forward to seeing the crab apple trees in blossom next spring.
