AUGUSTA, ME – Kathleen C. Lees, P.A.-C., accepted a reprimand and $1,000 fine from the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine in a Consent Agreement signed February 12, 2013. Ms. Lees admitted making a medication error during the process of completing a discharge summary for a patient. Ms. Lees works in Skowhegan.
The Board received information from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services regarding the death of a patient who had been treated at a Maine hospital. By dictating the incorrect medication Ms. Lees effectively prescribed a new drug to the patient in an excessive dosage. In addition, the medication was contraindicated because of its potential to adversely interact with medications the patient was already receiving. Ms. Lees has acknowledged the importance of accurate discharge information.
All Board disciplinary actions are reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank, the Health Integrity and Protection Data Bank, and the Federation of State Medical Boards Action Data Bank. These reports are regularly reviewed by every state licensing board in the country.
