AUGUSTA – Woodland owners thinking about harvesting their land are invited to a free workshop this Thursday sponsored by the Maine Forest Service, Kennebec Woodland Partnership and the Winthrop Conservation Commission.
The free “Are You Ready to Harvest?” workshop will focus on timber harvesting on private woodlots with an emphasis on good planning to maximize the woodlot’s economic potential, selecting the right logger and forester, including best contract practices, and harvesting in a way that protects the property’s scenic and habitat value.
It will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Winthrop Town Hall, 17 Highland Ave.
“This workshop is intended to give landowners who are considering harvesting the information they need to plan an environmentally productive and economically profitable harvest,” said instructor Morten Moesswilde, district forester for the Maine Forest Service, under the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
Such workshops are among the services provided by the Maine Forest Service to Maine landowners. Woodland owners also can schedule a free appointment with a MFS forester who will walk their land with them and provide professional advice.
Moesswilde said he frequently gets calls from landowners with questions just days before they plan to harvest their land, but that the process should ideally begin months in advance to ensure the best results for the resource and revenue production.
Interested participants are asked to register ahead of time as preregistered participants will have the opportunity to visit a local harvesting operation the morning of the workshop. To register, contact Maine Forest Service District Forester Morten Moesswilde at (207) 441-2895 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
