From my grandfather's diary... Summer Camp at Cobbosseeconte Pond

My grandfather, Alfred P. Manson, was born in Farmingdale, Maine in 1879, the son of a Baptist minister, and one of 9 children. He was a druggist and was a partner with his brother-in-law, James Elwood Church, in the Manson & Church Drug Store in Gardiner, Maine. He faithfully kept a diary from the time he was 12 years old, until he died at age 75. These are excerps from his 1901 diary when he was 20 years old.

Aug 5, 1901. Fine day. Father took me over to camp at Cobbosseeconte Pond this forenoon, and I am encamped with Woodward, two Malcolms, Hunt, and Blasdell. We have two canoes. Kid Malcomb caught 4 or 5 small bass and one large one - weighed 2 1/2 pounds. He caught them by live bait. Woodward went to Gardiner on his wheel and on his way back he ran into another fellow and stove their bikes up.

Aug 6, 1901. We got up and dressed for breakfast. We had 3 1/2 pounds of fish after it was dressed. We took lunch and (at 9 o'clock) got into the canoes and went to the outlet. Went in swimming there next to the picnic grove. Malcomb's mother sent out some baked beans and brown bread and we had them for supper. We went over to Law's camp this evening and played cards till 11 p.m., then back to camp.

Aug 15, 1901. Broke camp today. Woodward's father and mine came with teams and we took our luggage and went home. Sorry I am not at camp this evening.
