Boat Ride on a Stormy Day - 1973

Submitted May 10, 2006 by JAMES HORR

I don't know if some people would consider it fun but in 1973 when I was 9 years old on a stormy June day I was taking the Casco Bay boat down to my grandmother's house on Long Island. The waves were the biggest I had every seen and I was scared out of my mind. They cleared everyone out of the top of the boat to the downstairs. I saw my uncle and his friend, I only knew him as Mr. French, sitting calmly reading the newspaper. I thought that looked like the safest place to be. The boat got to the sound between peaks and long and that's when it got real rough, the boat tipped so far that the windows went under water and I thought I was gonna die but my uncle and Mr. French never stopped reading so I felt a little safe. Then suddenly as the boat tipped the door at the front flew open and water poured in. An old lady stood up and screamed and I almost peed my pants but I didn't want my uncle to think I was scared so I sat quietly while he and Mr. French laughed at the woman. I thought that was a little mean but it was funny after we made it safetly to the island and Grammy was there to dry me off.
