Governor and Volunteers Announce Results from Successful Annual State Employee Charitable Appeal

December 16, 2011

Governor Paul R. LePage and Commissioner Anne Head from the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation joined state employees in the Cabinet Room of the State House on Friday to announce the results of a three month campaign to raise funds for charities across Maine.

The Maine State Employees Combined Charitable Appeal (MSECCA) began September 15th and concluded with this afternoon’s announcement that more than 1,200 state employees have pledged nearly $300,000 to 500 local, state and national charities. Donations from state retirees are also accepted.

“Having been involved with the United Way in Waterville for many years, I know how much time and effort goes into a workplace giving campaign of this kind,” Governor LePage commented. “I also recognize that these charitable appeals wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of the volunteers---and I thank you all.”

In recognition of their outstanding commitment, Governor LePage and Commissioner Head dedicated this year’s appeal to the nearly 40 volunteers who reach out to their coworkers every fall and encourage participation. Many of these volunteers have been involved in MSECCA for more than a decade---some for more than 20 years.

“Our wonderful volunteers from all state departments work from September through December each year---inviting the people they work with to sign up for payroll deduction or make a one-time donation to the charities of their choice. Their personal relationships with coworkers make the appeal a success,” noted Commissioner Head, who has served as MSECCA chair for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

For three decades, MSECCA has benefited hundreds of charitable organizations. Since it’s beginning, the appeal has raised more than $6 million to support the outstanding work of charities in Maine and beyond.

State employees are able to contribute to charities until the end of December by credit or debit card online at www.maine.gov/msecca. Donations by check can be given to MSECCA volunteers, found in all State agencies, through December and January.
