Maine Science Teachers Association 2011 Conference Highlights “New Directions in Science”
The Maine Science Teachers Association (MSTA) will be holding it annual conference, on Friday, October 7, 2011 at Gardiner High School in Gardiner, Maine. The focus of this year’s conference is "New Directions in Science”. With the release of the Framework for K-12 Science Education Standards and the beginning of the development of the Next Generation Science Standards by Achieve, this year’s conference is a particularly important professional development opportunity for Maine teachers. The conference will feature a plenary session on the Framework for K-12 Science Education that will be delivered by Thomas Keller of the National Academy of Science and Anita Bernhardt, Science & Technology Specialist for the Maine Department of Education. There will also be session strands related to:
- STEM Learning
- Science Inquiry, and
- Science and Literacy
MSTA is also pleased to welcome Dr. Habib Dagher, Professor of Civil/Structural Engineering at the University of Maine, Bath Iron Works Professor of Structural Engineering, and founding Director of the AEWC Advanced Structures & Composites Center who will deliver this year's keynote speech. Dr. Dagher will talk about Off Shore Wind Research and Science Education.
School districts are encouraged to send a team of two or more teachers to participate in this important professional development event and bring back information about the development of the Next Generation Science Standards.
