MLTI Custom Technical Training (North)

We are pleased to announce 3 days of MLTI Technical Training to be held at Presque Isle High School January 25th, 26th, 27th. There is no charge to attend these trainings but registration is limited to 15 people per day. Meals will not be provided.

Introduction to the UNIX command line and shell scripting in Mac OS X
Date: January 25th, 2011
Time: 8:30am - 3:30pm
Location: Presque Isle High School, Presque Isle, ME
This class is intended for beginners looking to add to their OS X experience by getting under the hood and learning to work in the UNIX shell environment. We will work hands on in the terminal discovering how to command OS X from the terminal and write reusable scripts. This class is intended as prep for PackageMaker and Apple Remote Desktop classes. We will NOT cover advanced material on scripting in this course.
Material covered:
- What is a shell
- Navigating at the command line
- Commands and how to use them
- Creating a script
- Introduction to launchd
Prerequisites and Bring-Alongs:
- A basic understanding of using Mac OS X
- Please bring your MLTI MacBook with the current MLTI image on it
- A text editor of your choosing. Some suggestions for Googling: Smultron, TextMate, BBEdit
- No knowledge of the command line environment is necessary or expected
Introduction to Package Maker
Date: January 26th, 2011
Time: 8:30am - 3:30pm
Location: Presque Isle High School, Presque Isle, ME
Package based installers created with Apple's Package Maker application is the only supported method to install additional software and/or extend functionality to the MLTI MacBooks deployed at your school.
This class will be a full spectrum class running from creation of basic packages using the 'Snapshot' feature, laying out package projects manually, to more complex packages with pre- and post-flight action scripts.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:
- Create a package installer via Package Maker's snapshot feature.
- Create a package project laying out payload contents manually.
- Create a package that performs specific actions before and/or after payload is delivered.
- Create a 'Payload-free' package to deliver a script (e.g. via ARD).
- Combine several individual .pkg installers into a single .mpkg installer package.
- Create a package with a custom user experience.
Prerequisites and Bring-Alongs:
- 1 MLTI MacBook to use as the package development machine (please have the Developer Tools installed, or at least 5GB available hard disk).
- 1 Freshly imaged MLTI MacBook to use as the test machine for installer packages.
- 1 USB restore drive for the above machine(s)
- Participants should also bring their list of questions or tasks they would like to review during the class.
Introduction to Apple Remote Desktop
Date: January 27th, 2011
Time: 8:30am - 3:30pm
Location: Presque Isle High School, Presque Isle, ME.
Apple Remote Desktop is the best way to manage the Mac computers on your
network. Distribute software, provide real-time online help to end users,
create detailed software and hardware reports, and automate routine
management tasks all without leaving your desk.
This class will be a full spectrum class running from initial setup to
basic usage and into more advanced topics throughout the day as
participants engage around various questions and tasks.
At the end of the day, attendees will have covered the following items:
- Client and Admin setup
- Management of lists
- Reporting
- Remote software installation/updating
- Remote file copy/delete
- Remote view and control for support delivery
- Unix commands overview
- ARD Admin "Care and Feeding" (troubleshooting, backing up lists/tasks/command, etc)
- Setup and use of Task Manager
Prerequisites and Bring-Alongs:
- 1 MacBook to use as the ARD Admin.
- 1 MacBook to use as the "client" for labs.
- 1 copy of ARD Admin with serial number.
- Participants should also bring their list of questions or tasks they
would like to review during the class.
