Sangerville man pays fines and restitution for Unlawful Cutting of Trees

October 19, 2009

Blaine Nuite of Sangerville, Maine pled guilt to several charges involving the harvesting of timber on a woodlot in Sangerville. The landowner called Maine Forest Rangers when she discovered that her brother, Blaine, had harvested the timber from her lot in Sangerville without permission.

Following an investigation conducted by Rangers Samuel Heffner and Dustin Pickering, Blaine Nuite was charged with "Failure to file a timber harvest notification", "Failure to pay for trees harvested", and "Unlawful cutting of trees". Blaine Nuite pled guilty and paid over $3,400.00 in restitution and $270.00 in fines.

Forest Ranger Jon Blackstone from the Moosehead Lake District said," The Maine Forest Service always recommends that landowners and contractors have a written contract with each other before timber harvesting begins. This contract should be specific and address issues such as what will be cut, what will be paid and when payment will occur." Ranger Blackstone also said that Maine law requires that the landowner receive all scale slips and payment within 45 days of the wood being removed from the lot.
