Department of Public Safety Launches Online Crash Reporting Service

AUGUSTA, Maine – Obtaining a crash report just got a whole lot easier and faster with the new online crash reporting system from the Maine State Police Traffic Division. In the past, retrieving a crash report required a manual request to the Maine State Police. Today, individuals or insurance companies can obtain a copy of a crash report in much less time by visiting this new online service at www.maine.gov/mcrs.
This new service allows users to search for a crash report online from the Maine State Police Crash Database at no cost. The flexibility of the system allows for crash report searches to be performed using name, date of birth, crash location, crash date or investigating agency. Once a crash report is located, it may be purchased and, in most cases, sent to the requestor within an hour.
“We are extremely excited to be able to offer online crash reports,” said Lieutenant Chris Grotton, Commanding Officer of the Maine State Police Traffic Division. “Both citizens and businesses will benefit from on-line access to crash reports. This valuable service also helps to further streamline government services by improving efficiency and expediting the process of locating and obtaining a crash report.”
The State Police Traffic Division is the central repository for reportable crashes investigated by law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Each year, approximately 44,000 reportable crashes occur in the State of Maine. Crash reports that occurred prior to 2003 may not be in the database. If no match is found for a pre-2003 crash, users may use the online application to submit a request the Maine State Police Traffic Division for a manual search.
