Utilities and Energy and Maine’s Energy Future committees’ focus on efficiency paying off
October 21, 2009
PORTLAND – Rep. Jon Hinck, D-Portland, touted the focus of two energy committees for the state’s high ranking on the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s annual scorecard, unveiled today. Maine was ranked 10th overall, moving up from 19th last year, which also earned it the distinction of one of the most improved states. The Utilities and Energy Committee and the Committee on Maine’s Energy Future have made energy efficiency a priority this year.
The two committees have been committed to forwarding energy efficiency policy and finding ways to maximize energy efficiency. Hinck, who is House chair of the Utilities and Energy Committee and a member of the Committee on Maine’s Energy Future, said he is pleased the state is making such strides.
“The Maine Legislature has come to understand that efficiency is the first fuel, the place to turn for the best and cheapest power resources,” said Hinck. “It is gratifying to see that Maine’s efforts are producing results.”
Among the legislation approved by the Utilities Committee in the past session was a bill to establish a community-based renewable energy pilot program, crafted by Rep. Bruce MacDonald, D-Boothbay, and Rep. Herb Adams, D-Portland, the longest serving member of the committee.
“As we build to be more energy efficient, as we weatherize our existing buildings, as we find ways to get more work out of each unit of power, Maine wins. We have just scratched the surface: there are millions of dollars to be found and many thousands of jobs to be created in energy efficiency,” said Hinck.
Founded in 1980, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing energy efficiency as a means of promoting economic prosperity, energy security and environmental protection, according to its Web site.
