CAPE ELIZABETH – Rep. Cynthia Dill, D-Cape Elizabeth, is being honored by the Disability Rights Center (DRC) for her contributions to advancing the rights of Maine citizens with disabilities through her practice of law and through her legislative service.
The DRC is celebrating its ninth Annual Membership Dinner and is presenting its “Lawyer of the Year” award to Dill on Friday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport. Dill will be joined by Speaker of the House Hannah Pingree, who will be the keynote speaker along with her mother Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.
“We are thrilled and proud to offer our public thanks to Rep. Dill,” said Kim Moody, executive director of the DRC. “We are lucky to have her on our side.”
Dill is being presented the award for her steadfast support of people with disabilities.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Disability Rights Center, an organization that is integral to the lives of so many people,” said Dill. “I will continue to promote policies and sponsor legislation that ensure equality, dignity and opportunity for people with all types of disabilities throughout Maine.”
According to the DRC, in 2007, Dill was the leading Democrat to negotiate the new definition of disability. She not only helped defeat a bill that would have severely curtailed the rights of persons with disabilities, she led the charge in negotiating a more expansive and protective definition of disability which was later enacted.
In 2009, Dill sponsored a successful bill to extend the statute of limitations in the Maine Human Rights Act and also helped defeat a bill which proposed to provide blanket immunity to municipalities for reckless or grossly negligent harm caused to vulnerable children in their care.
