Rep. Leila Percy announces incentives for area homebuyers

Special incentives available to residents of Harpswell due to base closure

July 28, 2009

AUGUSTA – Rep. Leila Percy, D-Phippsburg, announced new incentives now available to homeowners interested in weatherizing their homes and people interested in purchasing a new home in the greater Bath-Brunswick area due to the closing of the Brunswick Naval Air Station. MaineHousing is now offering several incentives which make it easier for local residents to buy new homes and weatherize new or currently owned homes. The Gift of Green and the First Home programs provide incentives that can save a new homeowner tens of thousands of dollars.

"Harpswell will feel the impacts of the base closure for years to come and will miss the community involvement of the families that came to Maine because of the base,” said Percy. “I hope that the people of Harpswell and the surrounding communities can maximize the benefit of these programs and that this will create an opportunity for new homebuyers in the area.”

Typically limited to first-time buyers, an exception has been made for the First Home program participants in the immediate area. These exceptions will be granted only for the first $10 million in mortgages, and only in the 15 cities and towns most affected by the closing of the Brunswick Naval Air Station. These cities and towns are Arrowsic, Bath, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Brunswick, Dresden, Georgetown, Harpswell, Richmond, Topsham, West Bath, Westport Island, Wiscasset and Woolwich. Interested buyers in this area should ask their real estate professional or contact a participating lender. A list of lenders is available at www.mainehousing.org, along with details about the Gift of Green and First Home programs.

Percy represents Harpswell, Phippsburg and part of West Bath.
