AUGUSTA – Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree recently appointed Rep. Patricia Sutherland, D-Chapman, to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the Council of State Governments Eastern Regional Conference committees on Education.
Sutherland, who is serving her second term in the Maine State Legislature, serves as House chair of the Maine Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee.
“Whether it’s how to address budget shortfalls, how to better manage program and curricula issues, or meeting the needs of higher education, it is helpful to have an opportunity to collaborate and share concerns with other officials,” said Sutherland. “Maine has had challenges and successes with student achievement, revenue shortfalls, and school reorganization, and I look forward to sharing our experience with others as well as learning from them what has worked in their states.”
As a member of the NCSL committee, Sutherland will have the opportunity to attend meetings and conferences, and to collaborate with legislators from other states.
Sutherland was also appointed to serve as a member of the Education Commission of the States, a nationwide, nonpartisan group of elected and state officials that works to improve education.
