Legislation would reduce top income tax rate by over 20% from 8.5% to 6.5%

April 17, 2009

SOUTH PARIS — At the request of Rep. Terry Hayes, D-Buckfield, the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a community forum on a tax reform proposal that the Legislature will be considering in the upcoming weeks. The forum will be held on Thursday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. at the Western Maine University and Community College Center in South Paris.

House Majority Leader John Piotti of Unity will be providing information about the tax reform bill that is being considered by the Legislature. The bill, An Act to Modernize the Tax Laws and Provide over $75,000,000 to Residents of the State in Tax Relief, received a public hearing on April 2 in the Taxation Committee. Rep. Larry Sirois, D-Turner, and Rep. Gary Knight, R-Livermore Falls, both members of the tax committee, will also be available to discuss the legislation.

“This forum is an opportunity for residents to learn more about a significant proposal to update Maine’s tax system,” said Hayes. “I am very pleased to have the House Majority Leader, Rep. John Piotti, available to explain the details of this proposal.”

There will be a PowerPoint presentation on the plan followed by discussion with time for residents to voice their concerns and ask questions.
