AUGUSTA – Rep. Thom Watson, D-Bath, introduced middle school students from Bath’s sister city, Tsugaru City, Japan to Governor John Baldacci on Thursday, April 2. The students, their chaperones and interpreter were joined by Bath Middle School students and hosts in their visit to the State Capital. In addition to visiting with the Governor, they toured the State House and the Blaine House and observed the House of Representatives in session.

The Bath-Tsugaru sister city program is in its tenth year of cultural exchange and was the basis for the sister state relationship between Maine and the Japanese state of Aomori. Other Maine towns have since started sister city relationships with other towns in Aomori. The Bath exchange is the most active in the state and has gone from being totally volunteer/donation driven to a nonprofit organization with board, budget, and soon, a paid coordinator.
